Course description for General English and Academic Purposes

Certificate in General English and English for Academic Purpose Level 4

(The level is equivalent to IELTS 6.0/EFR C1)

This level covers general English,academic reading, academic writing, academic writing, academic listening, speaking and an individual project of 2,000 words.

On completion of level 4, the student is able to:

Recognise and use a wide range of language forms.

  • Demonstrate a comprehension of spoken and written English in academic contexts.
  • Display a facility in the use of spoken and written English appropriate to common contexts.
  • Communicate comfortably in English as an everyday language.
  • Demonstrate the English Language study skills necessary to successfully Commence an English-medium Higher Education Course.

(The level is equivalent to IELTS 5.5/EFR B2)

This level covers academic reading, academic writing, academic listening, academic speaking and a group project of 2,000 words.

On completion of this level, the student is able to:

  • Recognize and use a restricted range of language forms.
  • Demonstrate a restricted comprehension of spoken and written English in general academic contexts.
  • Display a limited facility in the use of spoken and written English appropriate to common academic contexts.
  • Communicate adequately in English as an everyday Language.
  • Demonstrate the core English language study skills necessary to commence a Higher Education course requiring a narrow range of skills and registers.

Certificate in General English and English for Academic Purpose Level 2

(The level is equivalent to IELTS 5.0/EFR B1)

This level covers grammar in use, reading skills, writing skills, listening skills and speaking skills.

On completion of this level, the student is able to:

  • Recognise and use an intermediate level range of language forms.
  • Demonstrate a restricted comprehension of spoken and written English in familiar contexts.
  • Display a limited facility in the use of intermediate level spoken and written English in familiarr contexts.
  • Communicate successfully at an intermediate level in predictable everyday situations.

Certificate in General English and English for Academic Purpose Level 1

(This level is equivalent to IELTS 4.5/EFR A3)

This level covers grammar in use, reading skills, writing skills, listening and speaking skills.

On completion of this level, the student is able to develop control and understanding of basic grammar and structure in order to possess a firm foundation for the extension of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for the next level.

TEG International College, Singapore

The general objectives are to improve the students’ English Language proficiecy in the English Language general and academic skills. It provides students an English Language Proficiency level so that they can enter into English medium higher education programme. Students on successful completion of each language level of the programme will be awarded TEG International College Certificate in General English and English for Academic Purposes at that respective level. The Certificate in General English and English for Academic Purposes at level 4 is externally by the UK Universities and accepted as their equivalent of IELTS 6.0.

Assessment

The general objectives are to improve the students’ English Language proficiency in the English Language general and academic skills. It provides students an English Language proficiency level so that they can enter into English medium higher education programmers.
